Tisei: Closing zoos would be costly mistake - Malden - Your Town - Boston.com: "Unfortunately, these two popular family destinations may not have a chance to break any more attendance records in the future, thanks to a $4 million reduction in state funding assistance. Faced with a 60 percent drop in state support, at least one, and probably both, of these zoos will have to close. That is a scenario that Zoo New England (ZNE), the private entity that runs the two zoos, would like to avoid."

Zoo might cut hours, staff to bridge deficit: "The fatal tiger mauling of a 17-year-old on Christmas Day 2007 has had a ripple effect that caused donors to pull back and visitors to stay home, and led the zoo to spend on safety upgrades.

It's a triple whammy in one of the worst recessions on record.

The zoo is projecting a $17 million budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, down $3 million from the current budget."

Talking to the animals, especially the evening's North American moose mascot, entertained patrons, who gave a record $261,905 to support the zoo's conservation programs and the animal residents."
