In December, Trinity College President Jimmy Jones called a staff meeting. All of the college's employees -- administrators, professors, campus safety officers -- packed the Washington Room auditorium, according to some who attended. Addressing the crowd, Jones announced that after a decade of steady spending and investing, Trinity was running a $10 million deficit. "

Topic Expert Opinion
As Americans migrate in increasing numbers to the Internet, online fundraising campaigns are gaining ground in the nonprofit sector. Organizations can now employ the Internet as a tool to create long-lasting e-relationships with donors and constituents. Once an organization has developed an online relationship with its constituents, its time to make that first ask. Consider these approaches to ensure each online campaign is as effective as possible.
Determine Objectives
An organization must clearly understand its strategic objectives before launching an online fundraising campaign. Setting objectives sharpens messages while also establishing standards for measuring results.

For instance, a nonprofits goal might be to improve awareness and acquire new donors among younger supporters ages 28-40. This campaign might include four different emails, executed over a 12-week period. The objective of the first communication might be to engage this demographic with an informational update on the organization's activities while the second mailing might be an invitation to a special event for younger supporters. The third might include a fundraising appeal followed by a reminder to those who have not yet donated."

RICHMOND - The General Assembly appears well on the way toward outlawing an emerging investment practice that allows investment pools to insure the lives of total strangers in exchange for a promise to steer part of the death benefits to charities or nonprofit organizations.
A House of Delegates committee voted Thursday to support legislation (HB 2766) that Del. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, sponsored at the request of two Virginia-based insurance companies, including Shenandoah Life of Roanoke. The Senate unanimously passed a similar bill (SB 1227) last month. Griffith said Virginia is one of only four states that allow someone to insure another's life and designate a beneficiary that has no connection to the insured person. "

A recent report on non-profit organizations in Alabama shows that three groups in Cleburne County make a positive impact.
The report, The Alabama Nonprofit Sector Report, aims to build awareness about the vital role nonprofits play in Alabamas economy.
The primary source for the data comes from Form 990 annual reports filed with the Internal Revenue Service by charitable groups with over $25,000 gross annual receipts and information from the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama.
At the end of 2002, Alabama had nearly 10,500 charitable nonprofit organizations registered with the IRS, and this figure does not include the states foundations and religious organizations which also positively impact their communities, said George Elliott, NRCAs executive director. Of this amount there were 3,161 reporting charitable nonprofits, and these organizations had $6.6 billion in expenditures in 2002 - five percent of the Gross State Product in Alabama. Also, the value of the assets of the reporting nonprofits totaled $11.6 billion. These figures underscore the tremendous impact that Alabamas nonprofit sector has on our states economy."

True reform makes things work better
You're a merchant, and someone's been pilfering your stock. In fact, your losses average an alarming 10 percent. Do you (A) slash your inventory 10 percent or (B) fire the staff and close the store?
If it occurs to you that you weren't given a crack at the right answer (find the thief and get rid of him), then you may have a future in business - and a burning curiosity about the news that a congressional committee wants to 'reform' a conservation device by smashing it.
This is a case of intellectual laziness that could have repercussions for Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, for Revolutionary War sites and for wetlands and other extraordinary natural assets.
The Joint Committee on Taxation cites widespread abuse, some blatant and well-documented and some conjectural, of a program that gives big tax breaks to homeowners who donate conservation easements to nonprofits.
The proposal, which the committee estimates would eventually save $1 billion, 'eliminates the need to assess valuation, conservation benefits, and private benefits with respect to a large group of transactions that often provide questionable or limited public benefits.'

More charity requests came cascading through the mail slot at Donna Stelmaszewski's house one recent afternoon just as she was showing a couple of visitors last year's charity mail: About 1,430 letters seeking money for heart, cancer, disaster, hospital, religious groups and others.
Stelmaszewski saved them all -- the pleas to buy crafts for hospitalized veterans, to keep Indian elders from freezing to death, to feed hungry blind campers, to make driving 'a prayerful act.'
She only gives to about 20 charities a year, she said, but her 27 charity letters each week include requests from groups she has never heard of."

But much to their surprise, the more than $40,000 raised by the Carmel Fire Belles' fund-raising calendar has been sharply rejected by city officials who say that the cash is too hot to handle. SPP Canada: The gateway to a new way of doing business

"Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises."
- Demosthenes (384 BC - 322 BC)

Imagine your workplace had the opportunity to buy its office supplies from a local company that hired hard-to-employ people from within your community. Wouldn't you feel better about your purchases than if you were buying from a faceless corporation that had its head office in a different province or even a different country? What if a company that was also a nonprofit enterprise catered your next office party? Assuming all things were equal, most of us would probably want to do business with companies that have a positive impact within our own community. Of course, unless you already know about these companies, it can seem a lot easier to just flip through the phonebook to find someone. Enter the Social Purchasing Portal (SPP), a promising new initiative that helps connect businesses, nonprofits, and government with suppliers that provide a social impact along with their goods and services.
