Bush Tax Bill Limits Deductions

Bush Tax Bill Limits Deductions: "Recent tax legislation passed in the House and Senate will limit the value of in-kind charitable donations, the Foundation Center reported Oct. 13.

If signed into law by President Bush, the bill will impose greater restrictions on the deductions that can be claimed from donated cars and others vehicles, in order to stymie what the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), called 'a real problem with some taxpayers vastly overestimating the value of their cars and taking charitable deductions they haven't earned.'"

Tips for a good online Pressroom

Writing911.com: "What does a good online press room look like? Writing911 has visited scores of nonprofit organization websites, including those of the 25 largest nonprofits in the U.S., looking for the best examples of online press rooms. Weve come up with some tips that all organizations should follow and have developed a list of more than 20 possible elements for your online press room, grouped into three categories: Must-Haves, Nice Additions, and Special Touches.
A Must-Have: Current Press Releases
Your current press releases should be on your press room home page. Rather than printing the entire release there, you can print the headline and the first paragraph or two, with a more button for the rest. This works especially well if you issue releases regularly and dont want to fill up the whole page with just one release. The American Red Cross uses this approach. Go to www.redcross.org and click on Press Room."

U.S. Newswire : Releases : "CREW Files IRS Complaint Against Americans For...": "WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Earlier today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service regarding four conservative political organizations, Americans for Job Security (AJS), Americans for Jobs and Growth (AJG), Citizens United (CU) and Let Freedom Ring (LFR), claiming that they illegally file as tax exempt organizations when, in fact, they are political organizations whose primary purpose is the reelection of President Bush.
Because the IRS does not afford tax-exempt status to organizations whose primary purpose is influencing elections, CREW argues that the four groups do not qualify for 501(c) status. In addition, because none of the entities sponsors a 527 organization in order to conduct political activities, they are avoiding the tax and disclosure requirements generally applicable to political organizations. Based on these violations, the complaint requests that the IRS withdraw the tax exempt status of each organization and assess back taxes, interest and penalties on each. "

By Joseph B. Treaster The New York Times Wednesday, October 20, 2004
NEW YORK An investigation into the insurance business is expanding as Eliot Spitzer, the New York State attorney general, increasingly turns his attention to whether U.S. corporations and their employees are paying more for life, disability and accident insurance than they should be.
.
In California, John Garamendi, the state insurance commissioner, said on Monday night that he, too, was concerned about extra costs to individuals for life, disability and accident insurance and that he was considering legal action against at least one broker and several insurance companies that sold employee benefits.

While the current focus of the New York investigation is on bid-rigging and price-fixing among commercial insurance brokers and insurance companies, investigators say Spitzer is also pursuing reports of payoffs that may increase coverage costs for tens of millions of people across the country.

It didn't take long for New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to hit pay dirt. Just one month after he sent subpoenas to insurance companies asking a simple question Had they participated in any bid-rigging schemes? Spitzer has uncovered rampant corruption in the way large policies are sold to companies and governments.
Last Thursday, Spitzer filed suit against Marsh & McLennan, the nation's largest broker of corporate policies. He has also implicated several major insurers that work with Marsh and obtained guilty pleas from three industry executives. The suit against Marsh alleges that the broker steered unsuspecting companies to insurers who had secretly paid Marsh lucrative kickbacks for the business. And it claims Marsh solicited fake bids from compliant insurance companies to give the false impression of competitive bidding. Each practice drives up prices for consumers."

After their most recent $2 million offering which included $1 million gift to the Broadwater Health Center in Townsend the donors decided to shed their cloak of secrecy.
Brother and sister Bud and Dolly McMaster hope that by doing so, they'll encourage more people to think about charitable giving.

'I'm hoping that maybe some other folks might start thinking about doing the same,' Bud said. 'Rather than using their money for a bigger tombstone, they can do something to help other people.'"

Charities fear vehicle donations may stall - Saturday, 10/16/04

Charities fear vehicle donations may stall - Saturday, 10/16/04: "Proposed law change means people giving cars to charities no longer can report Blue Book value or own estimate on taxes.
Generosity will pay a little less under the American Jobs Creation Act passed by the Senate and House recently and awaiting the president's signature.
People who donate vehicles worth more than $500 to charity will have to report the sales price the charity received on their federal taxes rather than using the Blue Book value or the taxpayer's own estimate of how much a vehicle is worth.

Required checks surprise nonprofits

Required checks surprise nonprofits: "Nonprofit organizations wanting donations from government employees must prove they aren't hiring terrorists.

Nonprofits not immune to cutbacks for workers: "Nonprofits not immune to cutbacks for workers

Nonprofit organizations continued hiring while private employers and government agencies cut back last year. The result: Nearly 10 percent of employed Minnesotans do nonprofit work.
But it's not all good news, according to a report issued Friday by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
About 90 percent of the 5,920 new jobs -- and two-thirds of all workers at nonprofits -- are in health care, including hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. But the most numerous nonprofits are social service agencies, and some have hit tough times, the report said.
Ask Tom Reynolds, whose small south Minneapolis nonprofit has laid off people, frozen salaries and lowered its budget.
Reynolds is executive director of Whittier Community Development Corp., which boasts of helping 300 small businesses in its neighborhood and 1,200 along Lake Street in the past 15 years."

MediaDailyNews 10-18-04: "FCC Puts New Restrictions On Wireless Spam
By Wendy Davis
Monday, October 18, 2004
Tough new Federal Communications Commission rules designed to take on the nascent problem of wireless spam go into effect today.
The new provisions, which flesh out the Can-Spam Act, ban unsolicited commercial text messages to consumers, unless they have opted to receive such messages, or already have a relationship with the sender. The rules prohibit marketers from sending text-messages through the Internet to wireless devices, such as cell phones and PDAs. They don't apply to ads sent to e-mail addresses that are then forwarded to wireless devices such as BlackBerrys"
