The AT&T National golf tournament beginning today at Congressional Country Club is the latest creation of a philanthropic conglomerate that Tiger Woods has built into one of the largest athlete's charities in the nation.

Like most PGA Tour events -- but unlike most other professional sports -- the Bethesda tournament is structured as a fundraiser hosted by an independent charity, in this case the Tiger Woods Charity Event Corp."

LA Biz Observed: Hilton and philanthropy: "f Paris Hilton still remembers the stuff she said about giving something back to society (c'mon now, stop laughing), a good place to start might be her family's own foundation. Steven M. Hilton, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation (he's third generation), sounds like an earnest guy wanting to build up the family's philanthropic side."

Charity Begins at Home

Charity Begins at Home: "A new initiative to develop the charity sector in Kyrgyzstan will need government backing and laws that make it easier for people to donate money.

On July 2, an initiative group announced a new project to encourage people in Kyrgyzstan to make charitable donations or volunteer their services.

One of the plan’s originators and backers is Askar Salymbekov, a member of parliament and a well-know philanthropist. He says the idea is to make charity and philanthropy part of the mainstream and encourage businessmen to get involved.

“This is being done to attract more businessmen and entrepreneurs to the movement and to ensure that people who give to charity enjoy respect,” said Salymbekov.

Philanthropy is not a new concept for Kyrgyzstan, but benefactors prefer to help people individually, and most private donations are given informally, avoiding charitable organisations."

AskMen.com - Find a cause: "Are we on the cusp of the golden age of philanthropy? If the scores of philanthropic organizations and foundations thriving today thanks to multibillion dollar endowments are any measure, the answer is maybe. Factor in the massive donations made by business leaders like Warren Buffett ($40 billion or more to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) and Richard Branson ($3.8 billion toward renewable energy projects), and the answer is yes."

"Since nobody wanted to pay for it, he decided to do it with his own money and apply for foundation grants.

To avoid any tax conflicts he had to separate that operation from his business. So he founded the Photographic Preservation Society in 2004; it is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Angle doesn't want to make money from the preservation society, but he has had to hire others to work at preserving thousands of images. Executive Director Russell Reeves is helping raise money from foundations and individuals.

Once grants have been received, the society can start scanning photos into digital files that can be shared online or reproduced without loss of quality. The society also makes sure all the information about who shot the photos and when they were taken gets preserved with them.

At the Funding Info Center of Fort Worth, which for 25 years has been helping nonprofits get grants, Director Teresa Wright sees nonprofits meeting community needs at 'either a low cost or no cost where the private sector can't.' She feels that they fill a void."
