Annual-Fund Revenue Fell in 2009, Along With Participation - Fund Raising - The Chronicle of Higher Education: "Annual-Fund Revenue Fell in 2009, Along With Participation

By Alexandra Tilsley

Fewer people gave money to colleges in 2009, and those who did gave less than usual, a study of annual funds has found.

Participation in annual funds has been on the decline for a few years, but 2009 marked the first time that annual-fund revenue dropped as well, according to the 2009 Index of Higher Education Fundraising Performance. The report examined donations to 61 public and private colleges during 2009. Although the negative trends were more marked at public colleges, there were few positive signs for either group."

Ideas That Work: Analyzing the Value of Special Events - Fundraising Well

Ideas That Work: Analyzing the Value of Special Events - Fundraising Well: "We have all had the experience of being in a meeting or having a discussion around a conference table when a well-meaning volunteer or board member suggests holding a new event to raise funds. The suggestion is usually prefaced with 'I went to...,' or 'The nonprofit down the street had success with...' and is usually followed by 'I think we should try it.'

Before agreeing, you need to consider whether your organization needs or can afford another special event. Special events have a place in every fundraising program. But nonprofits must evaluate the goals and objectives of each event to determine its value."

Add fundraising to list of challenges presented by gulf oil spill

Add fundraising to list of challenges presented by gulf oil spill: "This month, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that more than $4 million had been raised since the deadly tanker explosion in April and resulting oil leak, a fraction of the more than $6 billion donated to the Gulf of Mexico region in the year after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The oil spill has been called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

For many, the idea of shelling out for a manmade disaster is tough to swallow; some say BP should cover the damage, even as the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, the National Audubon Society, AmeriCares and other organizations have been pumping money into the area for wetlands restoration, animal rescue and help for fishermen and others who have lost jobs."

The Nonprofit Quarterly | The Nonprofit Quarterly | Nonprofit Newswire | Internet Giving: Great Expectations and Experimentation: "Among those leading current charges to turn the Internet into a philanthropic gusher by finding even more creative uses for the Web are Howard Bornstein and Paul Weinstein, founders of myphilanthropeida.org and allthis.com, respectively. Weinstein's allthis.com is, according to the Mercury News, 'a kind of eBay for charity.' At allthis.com, benefactors list unusual services for auction, with the proceeds going to the charity of their choice. Bidding opportunities include an offer from comedian Ben Stiller to record your phone's voice mail greeting, to a dinner date with former Playboy model Christina DeRosa."
