Clearly evident is a growing emphasis on three things: advocacy, research, and efforts to upend structural constraints. Although, historically, most foundation giving has focused on programs and practices (e.g., professional development or a new reading program), new efforts have taken to heart the lesson of leverage. A thicket of new advocacy groups now exists to mobilize parents, organize champions of charter schooling or merit pay, and challenge the more traditional powers (like teacher unions and school board associations). Research, most notably the Gates foundation’s $400 million Measures of Effective Teaching project, has started to refine, justify, and build a comfort level with dramatic changes in established policies. Pioneering efforts to upend tenure, remove barriers to charter schooling, or build out data systems create proof points that can reassure skeptical policy makers and offer replicable models.

The marathon will raise more than $2 million for charity this year, with 43 groups signed up to raise money through race teams.

The “Kony 2012” video became YouTube’s most-watched video ever. Upon its release, it drew rapid promises of activism, reportedly from millions of people who pledged to get involved in local activities for Invisible Children’s “make Kony famous” campaign, which was set for April 20, 2012. That date has now come and gone, and the actual turnout—almost everywhere—was lackluster and desultory. Some 3.5 million people had pledged or signed up with Invisible Children to participate in “cover the night” activities, but the planned blanketing of communities with Kony posters, murals, and stickers doesn’t seem to have happened on the massive scale first expected, as the enthusiasm waned after the release of the video on March 8, 2012.

The National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) has just announced a merger with the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest (CLPI). NCN is the nation’s largest network of nonprofit organizations, including 37 state nonprofit associations with some 25,000 members. Its unique voice reflects the input of a broad array of community-based nonprofits of all sizes, not just the big, well-heeled nonprofits and foundations. Integrating CLPI into its operations will be significant for the National Council.

I’m not talking about one-way communication that people view as a “salesy.” Publishing is about producing blog posts, video, e-mail newsletters, e-books, white papers, free reports and other types of content. For example, the American Cancer Society (ACS) created a blog site called MoreBirthdays.com meant to educate and inspire cancer patients, survivors and caretakers—a resource that connects the cancer community with the cause and ultimately strengthens giving.
