Boston’s Philanthropic Youth: How Tech Leaders Give Back Early | BostInno: Three months ago, the Wall Street Journal ran a poignant article called Young, Rich, and Charitable, focusing on the recent giving habits of Silicon Valley’s young tech elites. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Mark Benioff of Salesforce both have written $100M checks to charity this year. VC firm Andreesen Horowitz announced that all six of it’s partners will give away half of their wealth. A handful of young tech entrepreneurs, such as Elon Musk (PayPal), signed the Giving Pledge offering up their entire wealth across their life time. Sir John Banham, a trustee of the charity ShelterBox, has resigned after the sacking of Tom Henderson, its founder and chief executive.
The charity, which provides survival equipment to people affected by disasters, earlier this week said it had removed Henderson as chief executive following a unanimous decision by trustees.
But Banham, a former director general of the Confederation of British Industry and the first controller of the Audit Commission, said he had not agreed to Henderson’s sacking and has stood down from the board.

Now that Nancy Brinker is stepping down as chief executive of the charity she founded, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, her critics are agitating for her to quit the charity’s board.
She doesn’t want to go, and the charity’s policy of letting some people serve as lifetime board members means she is not required to. That could pose a big challenge in the next few months as Komen conducts its highest-profile fundraising races.

Asian-Americans and Philanthropic Giving: Implications for Higher Education: Asian-Americans are the second fastest growing minority population in the United States after Latinos. Between 2000 and 2012, they grew at a rate of 49 percent. Although there is much diversity among Asian-Americans, there are some commonalities that cut across many of the sub-groups as well. First, among Asian-Americans, philanthropic giving is based on the value of compassion that is inherent in most Asian cultures. In addition, giving to family and the idea of reciprocity in gift giving is essential to understanding Asian philanthropy. Like many other cultures in the United States, religion plays a significant role in providing a foundation for philanthropic giving among Asian-Americans.

Acronym: Digital Event Engagement Manager: A New Role for Association Pros: At any rate, that's how I came to attend the Learning Lab "The Strategic Impact of Digital Events on Meetings," even though I'm not a meeting planner (currently; in past jobs I have done meeting management). As luck would have it, the session felt a lot like a social media session—a lot of talk about traditional versus new, with face-to-face meetings being the gold standard (like traditional communication media) and virtual or hybrid events the shiny new thing (like social media).

Charity Navigator, one of the nation’s most-prominent watchdog groups, says it doesn’t want to punish nonprofit aid groups whose revenues are shown to be lower since they adopted a more conservative approach to valuing their product donations. The watchdog, which rates charities in part on their financial health, will give organizations the chance to revise past financial statements so they won’t be hurt by plummeting revenues.
