College and university foundations have long been important fund-raising arms for their schools, channeling the generosity of alumni and the community into their institutions.

But now, in light of decreasing state support across the nation for higher education, foundations — including those at the Medical University of Ohio Foundation in Toledo and elsewhere — are more important than ever.

That has foundation leaders seeking new and innovative ways of raising funds, mainly through business ventures that have the potential to bring large sums of money to their coffers."
