SU Pays: $2.5 million deal with city sets precedent for other nonprofits | syracuse.com: "Miner said she began thinking about asking the city’s nonprofit institutions to pitch in almost from the day she took office. There is plenty of precedent: More than 100 municipalities across 18 states collect payments from nonprofits, according to the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, a Boston think tank.

The approach matters. “Because this is voluntary, you have to wait for the opportunity,” the mayor said. “Sometimes it presents itself. Sometimes you can make one.”"
