One day about three years ago, the mail brought unexpected good news to Thomas Bailey. Mr. Bailey, executive director of Little Traverse Conservancy, a land trust in Harbor Springs, Mich., received a letter from Charity Navigator, in Mahwah, N.J., congratulating the conservancy on achieving the highest grade the watchdog group bestows on the nonprofit organizations it evaluates.
Though Mr. Bailey had not heard of Charity Navigator until then, the four-star rating -- which measured his group's financial health against that of similar charities -- did not surprise him."

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against the U.S. branch of a defunct Islamic charity that was accused of helping al-Qaida, but prosecutors said new charges are possible.
The Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation Inc. branch in Ashland was indicted last February on two tax charges for allegedly helping to launder $150,000 in donations five years ago to help al-Qaida fighters in Chechnya."

College and university foundations have long been important fund-raising arms for their schools, channeling the generosity of alumni and the community into their institutions.
But now, in light of decreasing state support across the nation for higher education, foundations — including those at the Medical University of Ohio Foundation in Toledo and elsewhere — are more important than ever.
That has foundation leaders seeking new and innovative ways of raising funds, mainly through business ventures that have the potential to bring large sums of money to their coffers."
