There are 85 non-gambling counties in Iowa who will be splitting over $5.4 million to jump start local philanthropic activities in their county. "

The Verizon Foundation in New York City has launched a Nonprofit Resource Center that offers online and offline training in planning, technology, communications, fundraising, recruitment and evaluation.
The center is powered by five nonprofit partners that offer a total of roughly 100 classes a year, plus online resource libraries.
Qualified 501(c)3 organizations can apply each quarter, with 1,200 training seats available the first year, and will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, says Donovan Wilson, director of external communications for the Verizon Foundation."

Indeed, Operation Round Up programs at nearly 250 electric cooperatives nationwide--including 22 in Indiana--have collected more than $50 million for charity since the fund-raising effort began in 1989."

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's decision to present live dance performances with recorded orchestral music is the result of wrenchingly difficult choices about the future of this great organization, whose 2005-06 season opens Thursday. It would not do to be naive about their problems, and they surely did not come to this step lightly. But anyone deeply concerned about the future of the performing arts will deplore the decision personally, professionally and artistically."

The Salvation Army is profiting from all those Big Macs Americans have chowed down on over the years, thanks to an estimated $1.5 billion donation from the estate of Joan Kroc, the McDonald's heiress. Atlanta will be a likely beneficiary.
The money will be used to build special community centers at 25 to 30 unspecified locations nationwide. The cash will be disbursed to four regions of the country, including the Atlanta-based Southern territory, which will make the final call on where the community centers will be built."
