United Way kickoff downplays money target
United Way kickoff downplays money target: "According to the U.S.-based Association of Fundraising Professionals, there was a drop in charitable giving in 2007 in the U.S. attributed mostly to the subprime mortgage crisis. Although two-thirds of charities raised more money in 2007 than they did in 2006, the size of those gains dropped dramatically, according to AFP figures released in April at its 45th International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego."

Hurricane Relief Efforts Create Red Cross Debt, Nonprofit Says - washingtonpost.com: "The American Red Cross said this morning it is going deep into debt to fund a $70 million Hurricane Gustav relief effort, an unusual occurrence even as the nation's biggest disaster-aid charity braces for a trio of powerful storms lurking in the Atlantic.
The Red Cross has raised less than $5 million toward its Gustav expenses, officials said. To recoup its Gustav cost -- most of it borrowed money -- the nonprofit organization plans to roll out an aggressive national campaign Monday."

Best Intentions - CFO Magazine - September 2008 Issue - CFO.com: "We must become a good company,' the chief executive declares, having just returned from a conference featuring the philanthropic Google Guys, co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. 'And I don't just mean good in the business sense; I mean good in the 'Don't be evil' sense. You know about the One Percent Rule? One percent of profits, 1 percent of equity, and 1 percent of employees' time allocated to doing good. That's what they do at Google — so we are going to do 2 percent!'"

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Jerry Lewis raised a record $65 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in his annual Labor Day telethon, a benefit that also made a pitch for those inconvenienced by Hurricane Gustav.
This year's 22-hour telethon added a special plea for MDA-registered families forced to leave their homes because of the hurricane, which made landfall Monday in Louisiana. The storm affected nearly 5,000 MDA families needing services in their new location, the organization said."

When the Association of Fundraising Professionals convened a ballroom-full of high-profile women last spring to launch its “Giving Matters: Empowering Women through Philanthropy” initiative, the remarkably fit and energetic 90-something-year-old exhorted them, “No matter what race or creed, we are all family. And where your family is in need, it’s your duty to help them.”"

The Wealth Report - WSJ.com : Giving by the Rich to Remain Strong in 2008: "Giving by the Rich to Remain Strong in 2008
Despite the weak economy, charitable giving by the rich could increase this year compared to 2007.
That is the rather optimistic prediction of Crown Philanthropic Advisors, a New York firm that sells technology platforms for donor-advised funds. The firm’s survey of donors and advisers showed that the wealthy–those with $2 million or more in investable assets–are unlikely to cut back on charitable giving this year."

Charitable giving's new quid pro quo
Charitable giving's new quid pro quo: "Good luck. According to many press releases that cross our screen, charity and compassion are no longer together. They are estranged. Charity has a new best friend: self-satisfaction. Consumers today like giving to others when giving makes them feel good about getting for themselves."
