Green Building: Kresge Asks Nonprofits to Take the Initiative :: PNNOnline :: the nonprofit news and information resource: "The Kresge Foundation is asking nonprofits to consider green building practices next time they embark on a capital project. Through its Green Building Initiative, the 80-year-old Foundation aims to help nonprofits understand and value green buildings, as well as provide incentive with special funding that is earmarked for green projects.
'We help growing nonprofit organizations build a lot of buildings,' said Foundation President John E. Marshall, III. 'We felt it was our responsibility to help them consider how building green might benefit their organizations, as well as the environment.'
The Initiative makes available special planning grants of $50,000 to $100,000. It also includes bonus grants of $150,000 to $250,000 to Kresge grantees whose building projects become certified through the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program."

Honing philanthropy to a hard edge - Business - www.theage.com.au: "An estimated $3 billion is donated to charities each year, but more than two-thirds of that is not claimed as tax deductions.
Figures from the Tax Office and Philanthropy Australia suggest that people either forget to claim, or donations may be from an estate, which is not tax-deductible.
Traditionally, the establishment of charitable foundations and other philanthropic structures has been the province of the very wealthy. But two things have occurred in the past few years that are changing people's perceptions."

United Way refocuses its emphasis to service instead of fund raising

'We felt if we didn't address this and set a course to add value over the long term, there was a possibility that United Way wouldn't exist,' said Sherrie Brach, United Way's president and chief professional officer.
Five years ago, leaders of United Way Services began questioning the agency's relevance and ultimately decided a makeover was in order.
Eight weeks into this year's annual fund-raising campaign, the agency continues to focus more on selling its new image than barking for the bucks to come in.
Fund raising is still important but no longer the primary aim, United Way leaders say."

GuideStar - News - Articles - How Ethical Is Your Nonprofit Organization?: "How Ethical Is Your Nonprofit Organization?
Almost every day, it seems, newspaper headlines shout out the details of another corporate scandal. Those of us in the nonprofit sector are tempted to think that we are above such shenanigansand the accompanying headlines. We are, after all, do-gooders who are uncorrupted by the desire for profit. Our motives are so noble, how could anyone question our actions?
Unfortunately, nonprofits are run by people with the same range of ethical standards as the rest of society, and we have our share of bad apples. In recent years, the Nature Conservancy, the Red Cross, a handful of United Way chapters, and local foundations in several communities have found themselves the target of negative headlines. Such ethical lapsesor perceived ethical lapsesundermine the trust the public holds in the entire sector.
Procedural Responses
Most of the responses to these scandals have been procedural. The common reaction is to encourage nonprofits to develop a code of ethics and perhaps become certified as ethical "

toledoblade.com: "IRS probe a waste, unfair

THE Internal Revenue Service has launched an investigation that looks more like a witch hunt. It's examining whether remarks by the chairman of the NAACP about the presidential race violated federal law. The probe is silly and the agency's excuse doesn't hold up.
The IRS says it will determine whether Julian Bond's remarks at the NAACP's annual convention in July violated a law that prevents tax-exempt groups from participating in political activity. But Mr. Bond did not tell NAACP supporters in Philadelphia to vote for or against any candidate, and the tax collectors are now twisting like gymnasts in order to try to justify this investigation.
This has a certain smell of hypocrisy. Pastors nationwide have told members that to remain true to God they should vote for President Bush. Some are targeted by the IRS, but many are not. And how does the IRS explain not going after Catholic bishops who called for priests to refuse to serve Communion to Sen. John Kerry and other Catholic politicians who are pro-choice? Catholics parishioners were openly being told not to vote for Mr. Kerry."

Supporters said this legislation was filed in response to several cases including one in which a generous person loaned a 19th century piano to a museum and was subsequently presented with a property tax bill based on the value of the piano because it was no longer in his home. They argued that charitable loans should be rewarded instead of penalized."

Starting Jan. 1, the deduction is based on the amount the charity gets for selling the car, not by the fair-market value determined by the owner. That switch could cost taxpayers hundreds in deductions.
The law was changed in response to taxpayers who claimed large deductions for cars that netted little for the charity on the wholesale market."

Giving money to charity is harder than it looks.

In 1987, when Lyman Casey ran his family's foundation, one of the oldest in California, others with private foundations would come to him for help and with questions about where to give. Casey saw a business opportunity helping families with their philanthropy.

BURLINGTON, ON // Tony Goodrow is a busy man. He's a Rotarian and is involved with a variety of committees. This year, he will be managing the volunteers for the club's largest event. And then there's a very interesting project: Volunteer2.

'I oversee the strategic planning of the software development and work directly with volunteer agencies and volunteer centres to promote a higher standard of volunteer management and communications,' he says in an e-mail. 'Regardless of the situation I am in, I am highly motivated when my efforts make a difference. Given the impact that a volunteer can have, there's a great deal of personal satisfaction in my role as a volunteer and in my professional role with Volunteer2"

OAKLAND - Attorney General Bill Lockyer on Friday asked a court to dissolve a San Francisco nonprofit group that he said appears to have diverted state grant money to the campaign coffers of Secretary of State Kevin Shelley.
Lockyer filed the petition in Superior Court against the San Francisco Neighbors Resource Center, founded in 1999 by Shelley fund-raiser Julie Lee, even though the group's board of directors apparently decided at least a month ago to voluntarily disband."

In a wood-paneled room in the back of La Colline, a French restaurant two blocks from the Capitol, a group of 30 Michigan lobbyists and businesspeople have gathered to hear Rep. Sander M. When breakfast is served, the Michigan Democrat approaches the podium and removes his sports coat, declaring: 'I don't feel like a guest here. I've known some of you for a long time.'"

United Way Chief Toils to Resuscitate Charity (washingtonpost.com): "Football players collided on the lighted field, cheerleaders high-kicked and the crowd roared as the Langley High School Saxons ran roughshod over the South Lakes Seahawks. In the stands, Charles Anderson -- watching with his wife and youngest daughter, while their three older girls played in the Langley band -- surveyed the crowd, hoping to find someone with a radio tuned to the Yankees-Red Sox game.
Anderson -- suburban dad, Yankees devotee, football fan -- knows about American icons and traditions. After taking over 17 months ago as chief executive of the United Way of the National Capital Area, which had been sacked by scandal, he has learned a lot about trying to revive a once-proud tradition. At 51, he has spent a quarter-century working for United Ways nationwide and wants to finish his career by restoring the local United Way to its former status as one of the largest in the country"

Now, with help from $8.7 million in donations, Food & Friends has moved into a newly built facility on Riggs Road NE -- a much larger space that has an industrial-size kitchen, modern staff offices and wall hues with such names as chili pepper red and mustard seed yellow"

FOR decades, the chummy inner circles of Chicago's business and political worlds have been marked with the footprints of men steeped in very muscular, very Irish traditions. In City Hall, that legacy has been personified by two powerful mayors named Daley. And in the Loop, where lawyers, traders and financiers mingle, perhaps no one embodies that history more directly than Patrick G. Ryan."

Local charities enter the holidays hoping the outpouring of support for September flood victims won't sink their year-end fund raising efforts.
'How often can you go back to the same people?' said spokeswoman Iris Valanti of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, now seeking donations for its annual Thanksgiving turkey fund. 'It's always an issue.'
The Salvation Army's familiar red kettles will start dotting the region next month. The holiday campaign, which runs through Christmas, brings in about 15 to 20 percent of the Western
