Brooklyn Museum: Community: bloggers@brooklynmuseum » Survey and changes after the first year of 1stfans: "Going into our second year of 1stfans, Shelley and I wanted to do a survey to see how members felt about the first year of the program. We knew that we’d hear a variety of responses based on how people used their membership, but we were determined to see if we could identify any trends that we could use to make changes to the program. Below are a few things we learned from the 35 folks that responded to the open-ended survey we sent a couple weeks ago, as well as two changes that we’re definitely going to make for year two of 1stfans."

Why Don’t More Members of Gens X and Y Join Boards?- Board Life Matters

Why Don’t More Members of Gens X and Y Join Boards?- Board Life Matters: "Part of the mission of this blog, with good reason, is to inspire and engage the next generation in nonprofit board service. The BoardSource Nonprofit Governance Index 2007 found that 2 percent of board members were under 30 years old, 36 percent were 30-49, 49 percent were 50-64, and 13 percent were over 65. These statistics suggest a lack of Generation X (generally defined as those born between 1963 and 1980) and Generation Y (generally defined as those born between 1981 and 2002) serving on nonprofit boards. Why?"

The Philanthropy Pageant

The Philanthropy Pageant: "Why do beauty contests in philanthropy get up my nose so much, like the recent rash of rankings in which business-oriented foundations appear at or near the top in Foreign Policy and Barron's? Let’s get the most obvious reason out of the way first—I don’t win them, nor do any of the organizations I’ve ever worked for. I once won a ‘beautiful baby’ competition at my local church in Manchester, but that was probably because my mother was in charge of the judging as the vicar’s wife. The vicar, of course, was my father."

Each such loan that ACCION USA provides averages $8,000 and contributes to the creation or retention of 2.4 jobs in low- to moderate-income communities. That works out to roughly $3,300 for each job created - extremely efficient when compared to the cost of other job creation strategies."

NorthJersey.com: Philanthropist lives on in the art of those he helped: "For generations, the big names in American philanthropy have been household words: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Rosenwald.

Rosenwald?

Not a household word, true. But without the philanthropy of Julius Rosenwald, these names might not have become familiar to us as the great artists they were: Marian Anderson, Zora Neale Hurston, Gordon Parks, W.E.B. DuBois, Katherine Dunham, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Jacob Lawrence, Haywood Bill Rivers, Woody Guthrie, and Hale Woodruff."

Fran Barrett: Want to Create Jobs? Don't Forget Low-Hanging Fruit in Nonprofits

Fran Barrett: Want to Create Jobs? Don't Forget Low-Hanging Fruit in Nonprofits: "The nonprofit sector employs 500,000 in New York, and 12.9 million individuals nationally. In New York alone the government contracts out about $4 billion to non profit organizations. Each nonprofit job brings value to a community. These workers provide services where there is a growing demand, particularly in this recession. One youth worker (average salary in New York is about $30,000) helps about 50 to 75 young people a year. They help them stay in school, avoid pregnancy, consider college, participate in civic and community activities, get familiar with the arts, and understand their own potential. One outreach worker saves hundreds of lives connecting at risk people with HIV/AIDs testing information, and linking them to appropriate services."
