Boston.com / Business / Markets / Harvard's PR problem: "The board of Harvard Management Corp., which oversees the billions at the world's richest university, met yesterday on the 13th floor of the Federal Reserve tower in Boston with a new chairman sitting at the head of the table for the first time in 15 years. Next week, annual returns for the $19.3 billion endowment are due, and they will be strong again. That, in turn, will start the annual compensation watch among Harvard Management's critics. The question, as always: How much will Harvard money managers make this year?"

Many of todays nonprofit organizations are starting to raise a significant amount of funds online. In fact, according to the June 10, 2004 issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, in 2003, online fundraising, as measured by dollars contributed over the Internet, surged, increasing by 48 percent at the 146 organizations that provided figures for 2003 and 2002. Although such growth is exciting, it should not be the primary metric by which online strategies are formulated and results measured. The primary goal should be to improve the organizations treatment of donors and prospects, thereby forging long-term, high revenue-generating relationships, irrespective of how people choose to give (i.e., through the mail, in-person, by telephone, online, etc.)."

TCS: Tech Central Station - Thinking Outside the Tank: "Let us take Lithuania, one of the new member states, as an example. To analyze financial conditions of think tanks and other NGOs in Lithuania, just like in other Central and Eastern European countries, is a difficult task. This is mainly due to a lack of data. In the past ten years scant research has been done on the financing of NGOs in general and think tanks in particular. As a result, there are few sources of data about NGO financing, while the quantity and quality of available information are fairly modest. Some foundations, think tanks and NGOs in Lithuania have conducted research to explore the motives and legal conditions of, and the trends in, giving. Yet, analysis of the scope of giving has never been attempted, so the only source of this type of information in Lithuania is the Department of Statistics."

On state tax forms, the Department of Treasury lists 8 to 10 organizations that are seeking donations. Taxpayers can 'check off' a specific group and contribute any amount of money, from $1 on up. That amount will either be deducted from the refund owed to a taxpayer or will increase the sum to be paid, officials said.
