Meeting the needs: "Finding volunteers -- and hanging on to the qualified and reliable ones -- is an issue a number of nonprofit groups struggle with, according to a study by the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy and School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
In the study, 40 percent of the 2,200 Indiana nonprofits surveyed said keeping and retaining volunteers is a major challenge. Overall, a relatively small percentage of Americans volunteer. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last December that about 63.8 million people -- or 28.8 percent -- did some volunteer work between September 2002 and September 2003"
