Oversight of Terrorist Financing Ignores Problems for Nonprofits - April 15, 2008 Vol. 9, No. 8 - OMB Watch: "Oversight of Terrorist Financing Ignores Problems for Nonprofits

An April 1 Senate Finance Committee hearing continued an unfortunate pattern of insufficient congressional oversight of anti-terrorist financing programs, neglecting to address the unnecessarily harsh impacts the programs have on U.S. charities and philanthropy. Despite an OMB Watch request that the committee hear from additional witnesses, members only heard from Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey. Both Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) and Levey raised issues relating to charities that left important questions unasked and unanswered. However, committee staff has agreed to meet with nonprofit representatives."

Microfinance Grows Up: Success Brings New Challenges for Investors, Practitioners, in Emerging Economies - Knowledge@Wharton

Microfinance Grows Up: Success Brings New Challenges for Investors, Practitioners, in Emerging Economies - Knowledge@Wharton: "Many of these problems are familiar to any investor working in rapidly developing countries. But one of the more contentious issues has evolved out of the very characteristic that brought so much attention to microfinance in the first place from people unsatisfied with traditional models of philanthropy and development -- the seductive combination of doing good and doing well at the same time.

Doing Good, Doing Well, Doing Enough?

From the development perspective, microfinance is all about giving poor people a chance to work themselves out of poverty, to be treated as responsible, productive agents with the capacity to improve their own lives if given the same chances that are afforded better-off people in more developed countries."

Economic woes hurt nonprofits - The Daily Breeze

Economic woes hurt nonprofits - The Daily Breeze: "A sluggish economy is always a double-edged sword for social service organizations - the government is slashing funding at the same time the need for prevention of problems such as domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and homelessness spikes.

Nonprofit groups throughout the South Bay are getting more creative as they compete for a limited amount of grants and donor dollars, a source of support that is becoming increasingly crucial to programs that in the past relied solely on public funding.

'Every year our job gets harder,' said Tahia Hayslet, executive director of Harbor Interfaith Services, a shelter and food bank in San Pedro. 'The clients' needs don't decrease, they actually increase during times like this.'"

The NonProfit Times - The Leading Business Publication For Nonprofit Management: "That finding, in the National Board Governance Survey for Not-for-Profit Organizations conducted by the accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP, comes against a backdrop of more and more nonprofits reshaping board of directors practices and policies to fit the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Just as more public companies expect their directors own stock, nonprofits also expect an investment.

The survey, which drew 603 responses, found that 56 percent of all nonprofits require donations. Although this was the first year the question was asked, the survey noted that this reflected “a trend that could become increasingly expected in the near future.”"

Hard times good time to give - 04/14/2008 - MiamiHerald.com: "For the most vulnerable in our community, social-service agencies are often a final safety net. Unfortunately, this net will likely widen, and we will likely see a higher demand for social services from people who have never sought help before.
