Mark Redmond: The LEAP Program: Successfully Connecting Youth With Other Cultures: So she started her own nonprofit organization, LEAP, using a completely different model. According to Calahan, "It's a partnership, not a handout. It's not about writing checks to groups who are in need, it is about joining disparate groups of people and asking, 'Who are you? Developing You

Developing YouFebruary 2012If you head a nonprofit, you probably tend to spend most of your time and energy on working to make your organization the best it can be. You want to fulfill that mission, and there never seems to be enough hours in the day (and nights) to accomplish everything you want to. Yes, you have good staff and a supportive board, but still it seems that your days are filled with e-mails, phone calls, meetings, and rushing from one place to the next. Technology, which is supposed to ease the burden, makes you available 24/7, demanding quick responses and eliminating time for reflection and recharging.

Boomers apparently don't simply want to volunteer, they want to start and run their own nonprofits. In a recent study by Civic Ventures and the MetLife Foundation, some 12 million boomers said they plan to start either a socially conscious business or a nonprofit during their "retirement" years. In other words, boomers plan to give back in a big way.
