Interesting blog post from United Way of Greater Triangle

United Way of the Greater Triangle redefining its purpose (Guest Blog Post) | United Way of the Greater Triangle: "The Triangle region has been recognized with many accolades for being business friendly, having a great quality of life and a vibrant culture. However, behind these accolades, the very real pervasiveness of poverty is hidden in the Greater Triangle. Recognizing this, the United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT) is redefining its purpose and planning to strategically meet the needs of those in our communities who struggle to meet life’s most basic needs. Over the last few years, the United Way of the Greater Triangle has been working with its partners and other community service organizations to create unprecedented collaborative efforts between these organizations."

United Way: The power of networking

United Way: The power of networking: "Andrea Rosenbaum with the YMCA captured the value to be found in the training and the sharing of best practices. "For a community of our size, there are a lot of very impactful nonprofit organizations who may not have the capacity to go out of the area for training or attend certain conferences, so I think its really important that we all work together to elevate the work," Rosenbaum said. "Having trainings like these and doing peer to peer sharing is important. Sometimes you get focused in your way of doing things and you just need to shake things up. I have been on the receiving end of things so much that I am really flattered to be asked to be part of a panel to share a little bit of my experience. To the extent that I can maybe make an impact, I'm willing to do that."

As the president of our local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, we are lucky that Rosenbaum has a humble willingness to share her wealth of knowledge and experience with others."

[Herald Interview] Philanthropy is about finding shared value: UWW chief: "Philanthropy is not about society’s “haves” giving their wealth to the “have-nots,” but about inspiring governments and corporations to find value via their contributions, according to the chief of the world’s largest nonprofit organization.

Giving Tuesday|Peter A. Georgescu

Giving Tuesday|Peter A. Georgescu: We already have a Thursday dedicated to giving thanks every year. How about a Tuesday devoted to just giving. (The thanks will be coming back at you all on its own.) That was the notion behind #GivingTuesday, a movement devoted to creating a national holiday to encourage voluntarism and charity. From the movement's website: "It's a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Be a part of a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity." The mission: "To create a national holiday at the start of the holiday season to promote giving." Organizationally, two of my favorite organizations are playing a big role: the New York's 92nd St. Y, and the United Nations Foundation.

Congressman Gets Mad After Finding Out Americans Are Less Charitable Than He Thought

Congressman Gets Mad After Finding Out Americans Are Less Charitable Than He Thought: Rep. Kelly was accurately referring to the 2013 World Giving Index, published by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which clearly ranks the United States as No. 1 among the world's most generous nations," Qualtere said. "The full report by CAF states plainly that the U.S. 'once again tops the index' and affirms that 'proportionally more Americans gave in some way than in any other country.' A quick and honest Google search by Mr. Blumenauer or anyone else could've revealed this."

Indeed, the report ranks Americans at the top overall, thanks to a No. 1 score in helping strangers, No. 3 in volunteering and No. 13 in donating money, which was the topic of discussion at the Ways and Means hearing.

United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley alters course - Morning Call

United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley alters course - Morning Call: Here's a quick summary of what's happening:

Instead of spreading its donated funds to a wide array of worthwhile organizations, the United Way told its traditional recipients several weeks ago that it intends to target most of its funds and energies during the next four-year funding cycle toward one goal: raising third-grade reading scores in selected mostly urban school districts. Its other main objectives will be reducing the number of people who are food insecure, increasing the number of older adults whose basic needs are met at home and supporting emergency services in the areas of disaster, housing and safety.

Marci Ronald, the local United Way's vice president for community impact, said this "Collective Impact" approach allows United Way to address the area's most important needs in a very strategic way.
