Philanthropy Front and Center-San Francisco: Update on International Grantmaking Trends: "Update on International Grantmaking Trends

Estimated U.S. foundation giving for international purposes reached a record $5.4 billion in 2007, and 2008 giving is likely to top that record, according to International Grantmaking IV: An Update on U.S. Foundation Trends. This new report, prepared by the Foundation Center in cooperation with the Council on Foundations, suggests that the prospects for international giving in the near term are also less pessimistic than current market conditions might suggest. ‘Non-profit making must mean just that’ - Times Online

‘Non-profit making must mean just that’ - Times Online: "Today, the nonprofit sector, as it is known in the US, is thriving. More than one million charities represent a huge proportion of the economy and almost one in ten people works for a charity. Many organisations – notably hospitals – that in this country would be state run are charities in the US.

But exactly what is meant by “nonprofit making” is the subject of concern for Mark Rosenman, a public service professor at the Union Institute & University, a distance-learning institution, and an expert on the US voluntary sector."

Today in Investor's Business Daily stock analysis and business news: "We do know some things, however. We know, for example, that high-income individuals, those who probably have lost the most in the stock-market meltdown and stand to lose even more if Washington increases taxes on 'the rich,' are the very people who typically give the most to charity.

The Generous Rich

A 2006 Bank of America survey found that high-net-worth individuals with incomes exceeding $200,000 per year or assets in excess of $1 million are responsible for nearly two-thirds of all charitable giving."

We are in the midst of an economic crisis that will last for some time. This economic slowdown will more than likely have a serious negative impact on the nonprofit sector that will be worse than the impact following the 9/11 tragedy. Not long after 9/11, we called together some members of the community, and McKinsey & Co. prepared a report and made recommendations to the nonprofit community. In addition, the Collaborative Alliance was formed to help and encourage nonprofit organizations to work more closely together."

LancasterOnline.com:Local Business:Charitable giving - now more than ever: "By Patti S. Spencer, Correspondent

'The measure of your life will not be in what you accumulate, but in what you give away.'
— Wayne Dyer

There are many losers in the sagging economy, but charities are at the top of the list.

Charities need more support when times are tough, not less. It's a vicious cycle. The shaky economy increases the need for charitable services, but donations are down.

Grant-making foundations are finding the value of their endowments down with the equity markets — their grants for 2009 are likely to be lower.

Most charitable giving is done in the final quarter of the calendar year. Folks size up their financial situation and make donations to secure the charitable deduction for their tax returns before year-end."
