There are many losers in the sagging economy, but charities are at the top of the list.
Charities need more support when times are tough, not less. It's a vicious cycle. The shaky economy increases the need for charitable services, but donations are down.
Grant-making foundations are finding the value of their endowments down with the equity markets — their grants for 2009 are likely to be lower.
Most charitable giving is done in the final quarter of the calendar year. Folks size up their financial situation and make donations to secure the charitable deduction for their tax returns before year-end."
