Kelly: UNMC to shine light on donors - Omaha.com: Omaha philanthropist Bill Scott has never been one to blow his own horn, but he and wife Ruth love trumpeting the benefits of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

So it's appropriate that Bill agreed to play his trumpet at the midday dedication of the medical center's student plaza — which provides the midtown Omaha campus an infusion of much-needed green space.

He put together an eight-member ad hoc band of UNMC faculty, staff and students called Scotty and the Grateful Meds. That takeoff on the Grateful Dead rock band was selected after considering the Med Heads, the Med Zeppelins and other playful names.

The NonProfit Times: Philanthropic Giving After 9/11

The NonProfit Times: Philanthropic Giving After 9/11: Philanthropic Giving After 9/11
Yesterday was a solemn day for our country. As we honored the lives of those lost on 9/11, we had to once again relive those horrifying images from 10 years ago. There were some positives we were able to take from that day, however. We remembered the brave work of the First Responders at Ground Zero, how we united as a country, and the re-ignition of philanthropic giving. That last point was something that was covered in the most recent issue of The NonProfit Times

As a private, nonprofit entity, it receives no government funding.

7 Things to do When Donors Cut Back

By: Katya Andresen, Katya's Nonprofit Marketing Blog

A new survey highlighted in the Chronicle of Philanthropy has some bad news: Two-thirds of donors said they will cut back on giving this fall due to economic woes. A pathetic 17 percent of donors believed the economy is recovering, while 43 percent said it’s going to slide further down. Only one in five donors said they’d consider giving to groups they’ve never before supported.

In an odd piece of happier, outlier data, 90% of online donors said they’ll keep giving and reported a more positive economic outlook. I’m not sure what to make of that discrepancy, other than online donors are faring better in this economy.

It’s the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 Tragedy … Who Cares? | Michael Rosen Says…: I, for one, care. And, I’m convinced that hundreds of millions of people around the globe care. I visited Ground Zero just weeks after the attack. Dust and broken glass were still everywhere. Tens of thousands of people ringed the entire site. Folks of every race and age from around the world stood in complete silence. I’ve never witnessed such a massive crowd being so thoroughly silent. I’ve never heard New York being so quiet at mid-day. The silence was only broken by an occasional sob or a child’s question. We were there to witness. We were there to mourn.
