13 Steps To Building Rapport With For-Profit Partners - The NonProfit Times

13 Steps To Building Rapport With For-Profit Partners - The NonProfit Times"Enlisting the cooperation of businesses to start a cause marketing campaign is a lot like fundraising in general: building rapport with the targeted company is essential even before the partnership begins.

A cause marketing arrangement, or commercial co-venture, is more than just a business partnership. Both the nonprofit and the for-profit hope to gain from the relationship, in both dollars raised and image heightened. A nonprofit that hopes to swoop in, use a corporate sponsor to make fast cash and then run off into the sunset is a nonprofit that will almost certainly fall flat. Trust and mutual respect are extremely important."

Audits Show Widespread Underreporting of UBI | The NonProfit Times

Audits Show Widespread Underreporting of UBI | The NonProfit Times: Unreported unrelated business income in higher education was found in almost every case examined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

“The audits identified some significant compliance issues at the colleges and universities examined,” said Lois Lerner, director, Exempt Organizations division of the IRS. “Because these issues may well be present elsewhere across the tax-exempt sector, all exempt organizations need to be aware of the importance of accurately reporting unrelated business income and providing appropriate executive compensation.”

Charity: The Fatal Flaw Of Cause Marketing Partnerships - Forbes

Charity: The Fatal Flaw Of Cause Marketing Partnerships - Forbes: Cause marketing is a win-win partnership between a company and a cause. Yet all too often companies, in an attempt to appear altruistic, use the “C” word when describing these efforts. The word that evokes generosity but also pity. A word that signifies a one-sided relationship, often one of dependence: Charity.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Criticized for “Little Pink Lies” - NPQ – Nonprofit Quarterly - Promoting an active and engaged democracy.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Criticized for “Little Pink Lies” - NPQ – Nonprofit Quarterly - Promoting an active and engaged democracy.: As NPQ readers know, this kind of critique has long been made in regards to some cause-related marketing campaigns where it is unclear whether the nonprofits or the corporate sponsors are benefitting more (for more, see this article on the business rationale of cause-related marketing and bottom-line benefits from Triple Pundit, this British report on brand benefits, and this report on cause-related public relations). Over the years, state attorneys general have gingerly criticized some cause-related marketing, including a now dated but still powerful report on nonprofit product marketing, “What’s in a Nonprofit’s Name: Public Trust, Profit, and the Potential for Public Deception,” and more recently, the 2011 investigation of New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman into charities taking advantage of the pink ribbon campaign month.

Major foundations are increasingly relying on program-related investing to achieve their goals, putting money into for-profit firms whose work meshes with the donors’ causes, according to The New York Times.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has increased its pool for such investments, known as PRI’s, from $400-million to $1-billion since 2009, and earlier this year it bought a $10-million stake in Liquidia Technologies, a commercial firm working on vaccine delivery. The Omidyar Network, the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, and other funding entities have also stepped up PRI’s.

SOI Tax Stats - Exempt Organizations' Unrelated Business Income (UBI) Tax Statistics: Snapshot of Unrelated Business Income Tax Statistics

Because tax-exempt organizations generally operate for charitable or other beneficial purposes, most income that they receive is exempt from tax under the Internal Revenue Code. Tax-exempt organizations are permitted to engage in income-producing activities that are considered to be unrelated to their exempt purposes. However, income from these activities may be taxable. This study measures income, deductions, and tax imposed on tax-exempt corporate and trust entities' unrelated business income. Data are compiled from Form 990-T, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return.

The future of Jewish philanthropy - JPost - Opinion - Op-Eds

The future of Jewish philanthropy - JPost - Opinion - Op-Eds: "Jews are still among the world’s most generous givers. But they are not giving to Israel or Jewish causes.

When we inquire about the future of Jewish philanthropy, we’re really asking about the future of the Jewish people. This is due to the fact that since biblical times, the two have been immutably interrelated. Then as now, philanthropy played an integral part in shaping Jewish life, values and society; it was never merely a question of helping the poor."

Mark Rosenman: Commercializing the Public Good

Mark Rosenman: Commercializing the Public Good: "The first of these was cause-related marketing -- arrangements in which for-profit enterprises boosted their brand image and sales by tying some small portion of their profits to a charity or social need. Arrangements like Product RED, while generating some good, always seem to benefit the commercial enterprise more than the nonprofits they were intended to help. Indeed, studies have shown that such arrangements actually reduce individual consumers' donations to the causes they ostensibly support, as well as altruism in general. As tax-evading Product RED spokesperson Bono once famously said, You don't have to give money anymore, you can just shop. Similarly, when corporations try to build their customer base using social networking and crowd-sourcing for their contributions programs, it is principally the businesses and tech-savvy charities that win.

Cause-related arrangements were followed by 'social entrepreneurs' determined to use the wisdom and experience of the market to rationalize the charitable sector and bring it to higher levels of efficiency and impact. Often backed by 'social venture capital,' they sought a new way to 'do the deal' to leverage private resources for public good while still achieving significant returns on investment, thus disrupting the flow of capital into existing philanthropic foundations."

Cause Marketing, Selfishness Drive Consumer Giving | Cause marketing for nonprofits

Cause Marketing, Selfishness Drive Consumer Giving | Cause marketing for nonprofits: "New research out of the University of Michigan confirms what I always knew was true: I was right to name my cause marketing blog Selfish Giving. After giving college students the choice between donating through a cause marketing promotion or donating directly, the students that chose the former felt more selfish, less generous and even less happy.

Maybe I should change my blog to SelfishStingyUnhappyGiving.com"

Sporting KC names stadium for Livestrong foundation - KansasCity.com: "Armstrong thought the concept of naming a stadium after his nonprofit organization — which is exactly what some Major League Soccer team in Kansas City was pitching to them — sounded, you know, a little bit crazy.
