The Washington area's charitable organizations -- its universities, nonprofit hospitals, homeless shelters, think tanks, theaters and national nonprofits -- are a potent economic force employing more than one of every 10 non-government workers in the area and generating about $33 billion in annual revenue, according to a study to be released today.
The study, by the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, found that nonprofit employment grew nearly twice as fast as other business employment from 1995 to 2003, and that the average nonprofit worker made almost as much as the average commercial employee. "

Trump, Slurpees inspire teen charity: "Donald Trump wrote a congratulatory letter to a group of Charleston, W.Va., teenagers who used the NBC reality show 'The Apprentice' as a model to raise about $23,000 for tsunami victims.
Teens from the B'Nai Jacob Synagogue Youth Discussion Group's project formed two corporations and competed to raise the most money. The winners' prize was to be dinner at a nice restaurant while the losers were to get Slurpees. In the end, only $2 separated the team, so everyone was treated to dinner.

Deafening Silence: Corporate Political Contribution Non-Disclosure Impacts Shareowner Value: " Center for Political Accountability report documents corporate secrecy on political donations, and a Common Cause report reveals how mutual funds fail to support contribution transparency.
SocialFunds.com -- Sometimes absence speaks louder than presence, to paraphrase novelist Toni Morrison discussing the role of Blacks in American literature. And sometimes an appendix speaks louder than the report to which it is annexed. Such is the case on both counts for two related reports on corporate political contributions released by the Center for Political Accountability (CPA) and Common Cause earlier this week. "

Rocklin and Roseville Today (Local Information & Services): "Establishing a corporate donation program
LILLIAN VERNON (Scripps Howard News Service)

I have always believed that among the many byproducts of success is the opportunity to help others who are less fortunate. Once a company reaches a size where it can afford to give back to the community, it's vital to develop a plan for social responsibility.
Careful planning _ the key to implementing any business strategy _ will help you help others more effectively.
Plan your program. The first step in creating your plan is to establish specific goals and objectives. Instead of simply reacting to requests for donations, decide what you want your contributions to accomplish. A good way to begin this is by determining where your company's interests and those of the community intersect. "

Topic Expert Opinion

Before launching a new fundraising campaign, a nonprofit must first determine its objectives and set metrics to ascertain whether the initiative was successful. Following are three objectives with corresponding key metrics and best practices any organization should consider when planning online fundraising campaigns and assessing success:

IMPROVE OUTREACH
A key component of a nonprofits online plan should be to build a base of supporters by growing an email address file. Key metrics include:

Web site traffic growth -- Increasing the number of people visiting a Web site ensures that an organization is increasing its exposure to potential donors.

Percentage of Web site visitors who register, also known as conversion rate Equally important is getting visitors to register in order to capture their email addresses and begin developing online relationships with them.

Email address file growth An increasing number of names in an organizations email address file is critical since the pool of prospective donors must grow for online fundraising to grow. "

WQED Multimedia is tightening its belt again.
'We're looking at everything we're doing at the station to save money and cut costs,' said George Miles, CEO of WQED, the nonprofit media group based in Pittsburgh. 'We're not hitting our goals in our fund-raising drive.'
Pittsburghers are concerned by the region's financial outlook, Miles said Friday, and that's making them reluctant to donate. Miles said that the company, parent of WQED-Channel 13, WQEX-Channel 16, WQED-89.3 FM and Pittsburgh magazine, missed its radio money-raising goal of $265,000 by $91,000. "

A Warning to Nonprofits from Economic Research Institute: IRS Has New Sanctions for Excessive Compensation

A Warning to Nonprofits from Economic Research Institute: IRS Has New Sanctions for Excessive Compensation: "A Warning to Nonprofits from Economic Research Institute: IRS Has New Sanctions for Excessive Compensation

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2005--According to the ERI Economic Research Institute, the Internal Revenue Service wants to know which executives at tax-exempt organizations (e.g., hospitals, charities, foundations, etc) are receiving excessive compensation. Once the IRS determines who those executives are and how much of their compensation is excessive, the IRS will impose costly intermediate sanctions, warns ERI. These intermediate sanctions can require that top executives at those organizations repay their employers (along with interest and excise penalties of up to 200%) for excessive compensation. In addition, Board members who approved of that excessive compensation and organization managers who knowingly participated in allowing the excessive compensation can be personally fined $10,000 per incident. Tax-exempt organizations have been put on notice, and a number of states are vigorously pursuing nonprofit organizations that pay their executives excessive compensation in advance of the IRS. California has passed a new Nonprofit Integrity Act of 2004 and New York State has a Not-For-Profit Corporation Law, both of which require that tax-exempt organizations take the reviewing and approving of executive compensation seriously. If they do not, they will be subject to non-defensible challenges. "

The watchdog group is specifically talking about proposed cuts in domestic discretionary funds, which could be as high as 8.7 percent. In monetary terms, that would mean estimated cuts of $137 billion."

 Baylor Clinic's revenue lags behind

One night last spring, Houston elite from Michael DeBakey to Jack Blanton to Paul Hobby sat down for dinner at the River Oaks home of Dr. Joseph Coselli.
Next to each attendee's plate of chicken piccata stood a table favor a handpainted miniature ceramic lighthouse whose symbolism was lost on no one. It would serve as a beacon of hope to guide Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital through the turbulent waters swirling around them.
One by one, the roughly 25 people there stood and spoke about the looming crisis, the institutions' shared history and the heartfelt plea they should send to governing board members to not let it end.
'Baylor and Methodist are stronger together than they are apart,' said Blanton, a Houston civic leader and oilman who is on Methodist's board. 'The sum of the parts is greater than the individual pieces.'
Nine days later, on April 21, 2004, the individual pieces fell apart. After 54 years together some the stuff of legend the two venerable nonprofits parted ways, squabbling, suspicious and, finally, unable to reach an agreement to extend the partnership in which Methodist served as one of Baylor's primary teaching hospitals. In the history of U.S. academic medicine, say historians, such a split has never occurred."

D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams's recent broadside against Fannie Mae, after the District-based mortgage funding company abandoned its plan to become an anchor for redevelopment in Southwest Washington, reopened an old debate over Fannie Mae's commitment to the city.
In the mid-1990s, the D.C. Council sought to repeal the federally chartered company's exemption from District income tax, and Fannie Mae threatened to leave the city. Fannie Mae's lobbying of the D.C. Council and Congress killed the proposal. After that battle, the company pledged to boost its local philanthropy. "

Krishna Vatsa, Secretary, Relief & Rehabilitation, Government of Maharashtra said, 'In the recent years, the exposure risk to disasters in India has increased exponentially and investments to manage disasters have also grown. And in such a situation, government does not have the capacity to manage such large investments and undertake relief and rehabilitation on its own and so private partners have to be involved'. He cited the examples of the Latur and Bhuj earthquakes where such a partnership was forged to undertake relief and rehabilitation work.
Private sector plays a major role and 'the government cannot work without the involvement of the private sector to manage disasters'. Vatsa was speaking at the panel discussion on 'Public and Private Partnership in Disatster Management' recently organized by the Bombay Management Association (BMA) and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies."
