Ever since she was a little girl, Chelsey Northern has been interested in charity work. Four years ago, she combined that interest with her love of cheerleading to create Cheer for Charity, an annual exhibition that benefits United Way.
The March 6 event at Robinson High School's gymnasium gives area cheerleading squads and dance teams an opportunity to perform for family and friends.
'There's no pressure on them because they don't have to do good for any judges,' said Chelsey, a senior at Robinson High. 'They're just out there to have fun.'
The event has continued to grow, she said, estimating last year's attendance at about 800 spectators. 'When we first got into it, we didn't think it was going to be nearly as big as (it is). It turned out it just kept growing and growing.' "
