Va. Survey Sheds Light on Nonprofit Mergers and Collaborations - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: A recent study by the Fairfield County Community Foundation in Virginia focuses on collaboration and mergers among local nonprofits. The survey drew a 30 percent response rate, and of the 104 Fairfield County nonprofits surveyed, eight percent have merged and 21 percent have considered a merger. Those organizations that merged reported that the primary benefit was not cost savings, but higher quality and quantity of services available to the community. Those who have considered a merger but did not complete one stated that the primary reasons included cultural differences, personnel considerations, and the questionable financial return on investment. The results of this study are consistent with David La Piana’s argument that mergers don’t always lead to better financial returns.

Top endowments in state now exceed pre-recession levels | Richmond Times-Dispatch: Three Virginia universities with elite endowments have recovered from the recession, and Virginia Commonwealth University wants to join their billion-dollar ranks.
The public University of Virginia and the private University of Richmond and Washington and Lee University say their endowments exceed where they were before investments took a hit four years ago.
The market value of the University of Virginia's total investment pool rose from $4.4 billion to end fiscal 2011 at $5.34 billion, according to the University of Virginia Investment Management Co.

Struggling Saint Paul's College gets two major gifts | Richmond Times-Dispatch: With the gift of a $500,000 challenge grant, Saint Paul's College has launched an effort to raise $5 million by the end of June to ensure the survival of the historically black school in Lawrenceville.
Without the grant from philanthropist Jane Batten, "we probably wouldn't have a chance" of meeting the requirements necessary to retain accreditation, the college's new interim president, Eddie N. Moore Jr., said Monday after a luncheon in Richmond honoring Batten.

These private agencies don't just provide services, they contribute to the local economy.
Carilion Clinic is a nonprofit and a big business. It's already the region's largest employer and is looking to rev up its economic engine by establishing a research institute in Roanoke in partnership with Virginia Tech.
The Roanoke Valley and surrounding localities have lots of nonprofits -- more than 650 of them, by one count, all much smaller than Carilion. Some dedicate themselves to helping people in need, some to enriching the life of the community through, for example, the arts. Most appeal regularly to the public for support, and get it. They provide services people like."
