Two investigative bombs with long fuses are sizzling under Tom DeLay, America's Machiavelli of gerrymandering and shakedown fundraising. They both involve active grand juries investigating alleged money-laundering and campaign finance abuses. DeLay, House majority leader, is still laughing off these probes in public, but he has hired criminal attorneys and begun a defense fund. "

Every Jewish New Year we recite the words, 'Repentance, prayer and charity avert the evil decree.' It sounds straightforward enough, but trying to navigate myriad charities, especially Jewish charities, is confounding.
There is often an extra layer of complexity that comes with evaluating an American arm of a charity that benefits a sector in Israel or Jewish people living in distressed conditions in a far-off country.
Then come questions of how much to donate and in what manner to give. "

When the trustees of the Belknap Mill Society decided to hold a poker tournament last spring, the idea raised a few eyebrows. Some at the nonprofit, which runs an art and history center and maintains a historic mill, saw a Texas Hold'em tournament as a departure from the mission. But then, in a single evening of poker, the society took in twice what it can make with the four-day book sale. Goodbye, reservations. Hello, new fundraiser. "

Religion is striking a high profile in the 2004 campaign. But there are those eager to see it take on a much larger role - both now and in the future.
More than 130 members of the US House of Representatives want to amend the law that prohibits partisan activity - such as political rallies, fundraisers, distribution of political literature, and direct endorsements from the pulpit - by pastors and houses of worship. They hope to do this by inserting a provision into a bill that is already before a House-Senate conference committee - thus avoiding public debate or votes in either body."

Northwest Indiana News: nwitimes.com - Opinion: "Our opinion: Taxing the money-making aspects of nonprofit organizations is proper.

For the first time, the Center for Visual and Performing Arts will be paying property taxes. Thanks to the diligence of two county employees, the popular center in Munster is now required to pay taxes on the catering portion of its facility, Lake County's Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals ruled last week.
That could mean as much as $30,000 a year for the county coffers. The county is taxing 16 percent of the center's assessed value, dating back to 2000. The arts center offers a popular Sunday brunch and is sought-after as a venue for weddings, showers and other gatherings.

This is welcome news. It makes sense and creates a sense of fairness to others who pay property taxes. And examining other nonprofits with money-making business attachments must continue."

Instead, she became an eyewitness to one of the nation's worst horrors, and the alumnus she was supposed to meet was among those killed.
The tragedy took the lives of several notable Haverford alumni, and in the aftermath, the school's seven-year $200 million capital campaign stalled."

Fundraising professionals say charities are looking beyond the old WASP war chest that has traditionally funded the city's hospitals and turning to a new group of philanthropists who come from outside the downtown core -- and reflect an ethnic diversity that hasn't been seen before."

The child of nature was a creature invented by the Romantics, whose cult of authenticity informed the literature of the next two hundred years. His direct descendant is the protagonist of countless modern films and novels: the prisoner of a false self revolting against the artifice of conventional narrative. On the face of it, Teresa Heinz Kerry makes an unlikely rebel."
