For some, the end of the state tax credit for certain charitable gifts is likely to be a hardship. For others, the problem will be that some corporate donors may still hold back.

Like a gentle summer rain, more federal stimulus money is sprinkling down on Michigan arts-and-culture nonprofits badly parched by the economic crisis.

The state-run Michigan Council for the Arts & Cultural Affairs announced Friday it's distributing $345,000 in federal money to 30 groups across the state, all intended to preserve jobs in the hard-hit cultural sector. Like recent direct grants to Michigan organizations from the National Endowment for the Arts, the money comes from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act that Congress passed this spring -- better known as the 'stimulus bill.'"

The Michigan Nonprofit Association's annual report, released this week, indicates that 45 percent of charities in the state have seen donations go down this year.

Meanwhile, 65 percent of arts and entertainment nonprofit organizations and 52 percent of community service groups also have seen revenues decline, Gongwer News Service reported this week."

Surveying a generous community- mlive.com: "A recent survey conducted by the Perspectives Consulting Group in Paw Paw said 51.5 percent of Kalamazoo area residents made cash charitable donations last year; the average for all of Michigan was 57.7 percent. In addition, 38 percent of those from the Kalamazoo area who were surveyed volunteered during the last year, compared to 43 percent statewide who said they volunteered. These findings were a bit of a surprise to us, since they run counter to just about everything we've ever experienced, heard or written about Kalamazoo. And we know we're not imagining things."
