(Money Magazine) -- Makeup entrepreneur Bobbi Brown wasn't looking for another charity to support when she was invited to a breakfast for Dress for Success, a group that provides professional clothing for disadvantaged women so they can go on job interviews.

She went because she figured it would be early and quick enough 'not to take a chunk out of my day.' Then she heard DFS founder Nancy Lublin speak about how she'd started the charity with the $5,000 her great-grandfather Poppy Max had left her."

Atlanta's rich become richer in number | ajc.com: "Wider world view

Looking at the bigger picture, the World Wealth Report detected some major shifts in attitude and sentiment among the wealthy.

The wealth report said HNWIs became more global in their approach to making money last year, 'driven by awareness of international developments, portfolio performance and risk mitigation.'

But they also have become more sensitive to social issues:

• 'HNWIs are increasing the amount of resources and time they apply to philanthropy, treating their charitable pursuits as investments with social returns.'"

World's wealthy worth $37.2 trillion: report | Reuters: "NEW YORK (Reuters) - The wealth of the world's rich and super rich surged 11.2 percent to $37.2 trillion last year but the elite group gave less than 1 percent of their net worth to charity, a study released on Wednesday said.

For the first time, the 11th annual World Wealth Report detailed philanthropic giving, and estimated that high net worth individuals turned over $285 billion to charitable causes in 2006. That's equivalent to someone worth $100,000 giving about $766 to charity, or 0.76 percent of their wealth.

The 11th annual report said, however, that rich people -- led by the ultra wealthy -- are increasing the financial resources, time and thought that they donate to charities."

June 25 (Bloomberg) -- Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chairman Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor who pledged most of his fortune to charity last year, predicted the world will become increasingly philanthropic as the wealthy donate more of their assets.

``I've heard from a lot of people since last year that are making big plans,'' Buffett, 76, said in an interview today about his annual charity auction for the Glide Foundation. ``I know of one fellow that's just been involved in a public offering. I think he's going to be setting up a billion-dollar foundation.''"

Americans set new mark for giving - CNN.com

One of the many articles today about Giving USA survey.

Americans set new mark for giving - CNN.com: "EW YORK (AP) -- Americans gave nearly $300 billion to charitable causes last year, setting a new record and besting the 2005 total that had been boosted by a surge in aid to victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma -- and the Asian tsunami.

Donors contributed an estimated $295.02 billion in 2006, a 1 percent increase when adjusted for inflation, up from $283.05 billion in 2005. Excluding donations for disaster relief, the total rose 3.2 percent, inflation-adjusted, according to an annual report released Monday by the Giving USA Foundation at Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy."

Absence of Major Disaster in ’06 Affected Giving | theledger.com: "Given the media and nonprofit sector buzz around what we’re calling the megagifts made last year, it is maybe a little surprising that giving did not increase more dramatically,” said Patrick M. Rooney, director of research at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. “I think what we’re seeing is philanthropy growing in a steadier, more linear way, when everyone has been hoping for a pattern more like the roaring 1990s.”

The Giving USA Foundation, which produces an annual report on giving together with the center, attributed the lackluster growth in giving to the absence of major disasters."

Democrat & Chronicle: Editorials: "Arts and prosperity

There is a link, and this community must use it as leverage

(June 25, 2007) — There's now quantifiable evidence that not only do Monroe County's nonprofit cultural and arts groups contribute substantially to the region's high quality of life, but that they're also a huge boost to the local economy.

A national survey by Americans for the Arts, the nation's premier arts advocacy group, found that the nonprofits generate $198.9 million annually in Monroe County. For perspective, consider that similar groups pumped $198.5 million into the Nashville region, which is known worldwide as a mecca for country music."
