Cole Hamels Runs An Athlete Charity That Actually Works - Forbes
Cole Hamels Runs An Athlete Charity That Actually Works - Forbes: Off the field, Hamels has managed to pull off a similar feat with his philanthropy, which he has pursued with his wife, Heidi, a former Playboy Playmate and Survivor contestant. The Hamels Foundation, which funds childhood education programs in Africa and in Philadelphia, is a tiny operation, with an annual budget of just under $1 million. But because Hamels covers all of the foundation’s expenses, 100% of every dollar raised actually goes to its programs, a rarity in the world of athlete-backed philanthropies designed more for buzz than impact.

Brian M. Carney: Pedaling for a Good Cause—But Why? - WSJ.com
Brian M. Carney: Pedaling for a Good Cause—But Why? - WSJ.com: I recently went on a 60-mile bicycle ride in the middle of the night. The venture resulted not from an existential crisis but from a charity challenge. By now the genre is familiar: A charity that promotes research into cancer or some other disease sponsors an event requiring feats of physical prowess or endurance. People sign up and seek sponsors, who agree to donate to the charity in exchange for—what, exactly?
This was the question I was asking myself as I pedaled, in increasing agony, through Sussex toward sunrise and the English coast.

Boston Marathon a Test of Runners’ Fundraising Endurance - NPQ – Nonprofit Quarterly - Promoting an active an engaged democracy.
Boston Marathon a Test of Runners’ Fundraising Endurance - NPQ – Nonprofit Quarterly - Promoting an active an engaged democracy.: However, some runners participating in the marathon are finding the new fundraising minimum—upped to $4,000 this year despite a sputtering economy—more of an endurance test than they had expected. Runner Allison Buzzell, for example, reports that she is having a hard time raising the $4,000, and the stress that this causes is exacerbated by the fact that “most charities take runners’ credit card numbers, meaning that if a runner does not raise the required amount, blisters may not be the race’s only lasting pain,” as the Worcester Telegram & Gazette recently put it. “The charities can—and often do—charge the runners’ cards.”

The Nonprofit Quarterly | @npquarterly | High-Priced Athletic Charity Events: How Lucrative Are They?: October 23, 2011; Source: Tampa Bay Tribune | For many organizations, the athletic event has replaced the high-priced charity event. Case in point was this weekend’s Susan B. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, a sixty-mile trek in Florida that was to have involved 2,400 participants. Each of those walkers had to put $2,300 on his or her credit card to participate.

Pan-Mass Challenge: How cyclists raise the most money for charity - CSMonitor.com
Pan-Mass Challenge: How cyclists raise the most money for charity - CSMonitor.com: "On Aug. 6 and 7, more than 5,000 cyclists will ride on 11 routes throughout Massachusetts for the 32nd annual Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). Routes range from 25 to 190 miles, and take one to two days to complete. To date, the event has raised $303 million, all for The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC, which is responsible for more than 60 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue, was one of the first athletic fundraising events in the country, and raises more money each year than any other single athletic fundraising event, say organizers. We sat down with the PMC’s founder and executive director Billy Starr to ask, how can one event raise so much money for charity, again and again?"

Are Charity Walks and Races Worth the Effort? - SmartMoney.com
Are Charity Walks and Races Worth the Effort? - SmartMoney.com: "t was too late to turn back. Sigmon was caught up in the nation's most peculiar, if widely accepted, charitable exercise -- the athletic fund-raising event. Every year tens of millions of Americans ask friends to sponsor them in events ranging from 3-mile 'fun runs' to 100-mile bike treks. And while it's such a feel-good phenomenon that few pause to examine it, the once bush-league strategy has exploded into a high-profile funding source for some of the nation's biggest nonprofits. The largest such event -- the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life -- raised more than $400 million last year. Meanwhile, the ever-growing movement includes tens of thousands of tiny 'thons,' collecting for schools, hospitals and homeless shelters. As soon as the weather warms, the walkathoners take to the streets, proudly parading in their oversize T-shirts and ribbon pins."
