Komen Finally Chooses a Successor to Brinker or So They Say - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly

Komen Finally Chooses a Successor to Brinker or So They Say - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: Our assumption is that Brinker plans on staying. We don’t stand with those who think that a founder cannot stay on once a new leader steps in, but in this case, we doubt somewhat that this leadership shift is entirely…how shall we say it?…sincere in its aim to transfer the reins of power. What do you think?—Ruth McCambridge

New CEO aims to diversify Komen fundraising Philanthropy North Carolina: On the heels of that drop, Komen’s Raleigh-based North Carolina Triangle to the Coast affiliate has a new executive director and big plans to diversify its fundraising to support its recent expansion in southeastern North Carolina.

“We’ve been extremely successful with our events,” says Pam Kohl, a nonprofit veteran who joined Komen in August after serving for nine years as district director for U.S. Rep. Brad Miller. “Just like any nonprofit, we know we can never depend on any particular revenue stream.”

Now that Nancy Brinker is stepping down as chief executive of the charity she founded, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, her critics are agitating for her to quit the charity’s board.

She doesn’t want to go, and the charity’s policy of letting some people serve as lifetime board members means she is not required to. That could pose a big challenge in the next few months as Komen conducts its highest-profile fundraising races.

Komen breast-cancer charity fights to keep support - NorthJersey.com

Komen breast-cancer charity fights to keep support - NorthJersey.com: But critics say the drop-off in donations shows how hard it’s going to be for the organization to redeem its image and win back the support of the thousands who abandoned it.

“Any non-profit has just one incredibly valuable asset: trust,” said Andrew Watt, chief executive of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in Arlington, Va. “Once you destroy that trust, it takes a lot longer to restore it.”

Komen, Catholic Groups Have Complicated Relationship - NPQ – Nonprofit Quarterly - Promoting an active an engaged democracy.: It should come as no surprise that the Catholic Church takes issue with Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s funding of Planned Parenthood. What is perhaps more surprising is the continuing symbiotic fiscal relationship between Komen and Catholic institutions, which has largely escaped the public view. In 2011, Komen granted $7.4 million to Catholic organizations such as universities, hospitals and charities.

From Komen to Limbaugh, what can companies do when affiliations misfire? : BusinessJournalism.org Reynolds Center for Business Journalism: These case studies are quite interesting from the marketing, advertising, consumer relations, corporate governance and other points of view. And of course, the impact of social media on corporate image and crisis management is quite riveting; McDonald’s just had to issue this Facebook apology after a joking reference to pit bulls in a Chicken McBites ad, for example. That probably wouldn’t have happened pre-Twitter.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is conducting a poll to learn more about the best ways to apologize for the furor it aroused a few weeks ago when it cut off support for Planned Parenthood, then reinstated it after sustaining days of protest from angry donors and others.

Nonprofit experts say the poll may well do the opposite of what Komen wants to do—soothe donor anger—and offers a lesson to other nonprofits on what not to do when it comes to managing an image problem.

Maxim Thorne: The Komen-Planned Parenthood Case -- A Philanthropic and Political Victory for Us All

Maxim Thorne: The Komen-Planned Parenthood Case -- A Philanthropic and Political Victory for Us All: I like the fact that Komen's strategies have been entrepreneurial and they pay to get the best talent, and thus get people to give more time, and more treasure. And I like the brand they created.

Why then the outrage that hit the Komen Foundation because of its decision to defund Planned Parenthood?

Well the Komen Foundation forgot what donors believed about the Komen brand and that's surprising. My own impression of the Komen brand was that it was a non-partisan tough organization that focused on its mission and got most of the world to believe that women's health -- and breast cancer in particular -- was not a political issue. We could all support it and believe it was the big pink umbrella -- the pink ribbon for us all.

Karen Handel, vice president for public policy at Susan G. Komen Stumbles, Recovers…Can the Damage be Undone? | onPhilanthropy

Komen Stumbles, Recovers…Can the Damage be Undone? | onPhilanthropy: Among members of the philanthropic, political and healthcare sectors, a loud snap was distinctly heard today, as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation suffered a sharp case of whiplash. In a statement this morning, Komen rescinded its decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood for breast health programs – a decision whose announcement 48 hours earlier had unleashed a clamor of protest, rapid reaction and retaliation. Possibly the most prominent critic, who spoke with his fortune as well as his words, was NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who promptly pledged $250,000 in matching funds for donors to support Planned Parenthood and help replace the slashed funds, approximately $700,000. Another $100,000 challenge grant was announced this morning by Livestrong, the cancer-fighting organization founded by survivor Lance Armstrong.

The Nonprofit Quarterly | @npquarterly | High-Priced Athletic Charity Events: How Lucrative Are They?: October 23, 2011; Source: Tampa Bay Tribune | For many organizations, the athletic event has replaced the high-priced charity event. Case in point was this weekend’s Susan B. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, a sixty-mile trek in Florida that was to have involved 2,400 participants. Each of those walkers had to put $2,300 on his or her credit card to participate.
