Saving Catholic schools - baltimoresun.com

Saving Catholic schools - baltimoresun.com: "Two things should be done. The first is symbolic. We need the state's top officials to step forward. Ideally, Gov. Martin O'Malley, himself a product of Catholic education, flanked by the state superintendent of schools, the Baltimore schools CEO and others, should make clear that Maryland supports all great schools, and that the closure of any of these - Catholic or otherwise - is a loss for the state.

This would not represent narrow state support for religious schools; on the contrary, it would demonstrate our leaders' agnosticism about who operates a school. It would show that they equally support all excellent schools - traditional public, charter public, secular private and faith-based - especially when they help our most at-risk children.

The second change is legislative."

Nonprofits appear to be cutting back on solicitation volume, focusing on their current donor files and trying to reactivate lapsed donors during this economic downturn.

“We’re seeing volumes on lists across the board decrease,” said Diana Estremera, senior vice president at May Development Services, a division of Direct Media, in Greenwich, Conn. “That’s a drag because if you’re trying to achieve quantity, it forces you to go to outside lists that are out of their core range,” she said."

Even in tough times, nonprofits can grow

Even in tough times, nonprofits can grow: "o what can a struggling nonprofit do to make a compelling case for funding even while its benefactors are struggling, too?

First, realize that a strong and effective marketing and public relations/donor relations program can be built gradually. This is critical. Far too many nonprofits and small businesses doom themselves to fundraising Siberia because they assume they can't afford a sophisticated marketing program. Their mistake is in thinking that some organization they respect started with a huge program all at once. In truth, most begin with baby steps."
