Dwindling gifts put nonprofits in a pinch

By JEFFREY SPIVAK The Kansas City Star

A new report confirms what local nonprofits have long suspected: Charitable giving has been dropping this decade, putting nonprofit budgets in a pinch.
The report from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation pins the blame not on Kansas Citys changing foundation environment but on individual donors, who make up the bulk of philanthropic donations."

"The link between philanthropy and purchases is seen from the finding that 60% of prosumers make a conscious effort to buy grooming/beauty products that have not been tested on animals.

Philanthropy and social messages are all poised to become marketing tools. As society gets more materialistic, people will try to balance it with “convenient” social service. What better way to do that than to buy that brand of soap you would have bought anyway, but now secure in the knowledge that you have contributed to the good of humanity? "

Modern attitude toward philanthropy urges involvement, not just cash handouts.

By Elizabeth Olson
The New York Times

Successful entrepreneurs like to contribute to worthy causes, whether the local Kiwanis or a national charity.

Their motives can be mixed. They might want to help make a better world, but polishing their public image doesn't hurt their bottom lines, either.
In recent years, specialists say, small businesses are becoming more creative in giving. And younger entrepreneurs are displaying a philanthropic spirit that goes beyond self-promotion and to the heart of how they define themselves, charity specialists report."

Aspen Times News for Aspen Colorado - Columnists: "Making a profit not the answer for nonprofits

Guest Opinion

By Kris Marsh
July 16, 2005

(Editor's note: The following column is in response to the story 'Local philanthropist wants to help nonprofits change their financial ways,' published in the Wednesday, July 13 issue of The Aspen Times.)

I was dismayed to read in The Aspen Times July 13 issue that the old disparaging rhetoric about not-for-profits has reared its ugly head again. The idea that organizations committed to working toward the common good and tackling the most pressing social problems and issues are somehow operating in an un-businesslike manner and thus are fatally flawed will not fly. This attitude is pejorative and unfair.

Finances Of Nonprofit Groups Rarely Reviewed By IRS Agents - from TBO.com: "Although most U.S. tax-exempt agencies are required to report their finances every year to the Internal Revenue Service in forms called 990s, most go unread because the IRS doesn't have enough people to review them.

Some nonprofit agencies knowingly take advantage of this and file 990s that are inaccurate, experts say."

But the computer whiz packed neither a firearm nor his cowboy boots when he traveled to Ulan Bator, the country's capital. He did, however, corral computer network problems and protect a bank's customer data.

Malmgren, 31, didn't know what to expect before he landed in Mongolia to work as a high-tech volunteer. 'I was picturing a board room with guys in fur boots and fur hats carrying battle axes,' the Houston native joked, referring to bankers in Mongolia.

Instead, he found a country with Third World technology."
