How Fans Run The Largest U.S. Anime Convention As A Non-Profit: "Despite its enormous economic impact, you might be surprised to discover that Anime Expo is run as a 503(c)(6) tax-exempt non-profit. Like most companies in this categorization, it is run by a board of directors and publicly discloses its earnings every year. As a non-profit, the SPJA usually brings in as much as it makes, by charging admittance to attendees, table fees to exhibitors, and advertising space to sponsors. According to 2011 records on Guidestar, the company brought in $3 million, and spent slightly more than that organizing the next year’s event. It’s a typical cash flow for the company, since Anime Expo keeps attracting more fans (and therefore costing a little more) every year."

Relief Groups Expand Fundraising in Fight for Aid Dollars - The Chronicle of Philanthropy: "Major aid charities have more than tripled their spending on fundraising over the past decade amid a boom in international aid and fierce competition to draw donors, the Thomson Reuters Foundation reports. Again, one of the most immediate variables that needed to be dealt with was enrollment. The student body was at 700 last year, and the new regime was unsure how many students would enroll or re-enroll after the college’s former board voted to close the college last March—and after the ensuing struggle, where the outcome was iffy."
