Canada NewsWire Group-Attention Business Editor: New Budget Contains Little Support for Canada's Charitable Sector

Canada NewsWire Group: "Attention Business Editor:
New Budget Contains Little Support for Canada's Charitable Sector

OTTAWA, Feb. 24 /CNW/ -- The Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP) today expressed disappointment about the lack of support
related to charities and charitable fundraising contained in the 2005 federal
budget released late yesterday.
While AFP remains optimistic about the government's interest in charities
and its willingness to support them, the new budget barely mentions the sector
and ignores several proposals made by AFP and other representatives of the
nonprofit sector during recent Pre-Budget Consultations.
During the Consultations in November 2004, AFP recommended the complete
elimination of the capital gains tax on all gifts of qualified securities and
appreciated assets, including real estate, to charity. It also called for the
adoption of a government-sponsored day to recognize and increase public
awareness of philanthropy and charitable giving."
