How Fans Run The Largest U.S. Anime Convention As A Non-Profit

How Fans Run The Largest U.S. Anime Convention As A Non-Profit: "Despite its enormous economic impact, you might be surprised to discover that Anime Expo is run as a 503(c)(6) tax-exempt non-profit. Like most companies in this categorization, it is run by a board of directors and publicly discloses its earnings every year. As a non-profit, the SPJA usually brings in as much as it makes, by charging admittance to attendees, table fees to exhibitors, and advertising space to sponsors. According to 2011 records on Guidestar, the company brought in $3 million, and spent slightly more than that organizing the next year’s event. It’s a typical cash flow for the company, since Anime Expo keeps attracting more fans (and therefore costing a little more) every year."

Sweet Briar at 300 Students and Counting in the Run-up to the Academic Year | Nonprofit Quarterly

the Sweet Briar story continues (Sweet Briar stories)

Sweet Briar at 300 Students and Counting in the Run-up to the Academic Year | Nonprofit Quarterly: "Over the course of twelve days, the brand new board of Sweet Briar College has met three times, including yesterday via teleconference, to make the decisions required to try to keep the college open. Again, one of the most immediate variables that needed to be dealt with was enrollment. The student body was at 700 last year, and the new regime was unsure how many students would enroll or re-enroll after the college’s former board voted to close the college last March—and after the ensuing struggle, where the outcome was iffy."

Survey Says: Fundraising at the Register - NonProfit PRO: "If you walked into a Walgreens pharmacy in the month of May, there’s a good chance your trip to the checkout counter involved more than just the usual assortment of two-for-$3 candy specials and glossy magazine covers. That’s because Red Nose Day—a premier celebrity telefunding event in the U.K.—was readying its May 21 U.S. debut, and Walgreens was the exclusive provider of the eponymous red noses, available for $1 at the register."

Virtual Reality Could Be the Next Big Thing in Charitable Giving | Smart News | Smithsonian: "sometimes, all it takes to inspire more charitable giving is a visit to a place or person in need. That could be changing, writes NPR’s Linda Poon, thanks to virtual reality experiences designed to increase empathy and charitable giving."

Nonprofit Crowdfunds Homes For People In Need, Gives Donors Updates On Families They've Helped

Nonprofit Crowdfunds Homes For People In Need, Gives Donors Updates On Families They've Helped: "For donors who want to know exactly how their money’s being spent, there’s a new transparent nonprofit that allows its supporters to rest easy.

New Story, an Atlanta-based group, identifies families in need, shares their struggles via moving video stories and then solicits donations from supporters. But what distinguishes this initiative from other similar-sounding ones is that every dollar goes right to the profiled family and donors are kept abreast of the developments every step of the way."

The Power Of Non-Cash Gifts - The NonProfit Times

The Power Of Non-Cash Gifts - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "Survey after survey shows that donors rarely cite tax advantages as their most important reason for giving. That is good. It means your donors give because they care about your mission.

It is still in the best interests of your donor to maximize the tax benefit of their gifts whenever possible. Likewise, it is in the best interests of the nonprofit and donors for staff to help donors develop strategies to do so."

Donation Dos and Don'ts | Amy L. Freeman

Donation Dos and Don'ts | Amy L. Freeman: "I think that giving would be more effective if we nonprofits were clearer about not just what we need, but also what we don't need. Well-meaning donors tend to err on the side of excess: "Well, maybe they can use it." The nonprofit, not wanting to offend, tends to simply accept what people bring to them. If we nonprofits urged a bit more triage on the donor end, I suspect that, rather than being offended, donors would be happy to eliminate that "maybe." Staff would have less work sorting items, and clients would get only items they will use.

So here are my everyone-wins donation dos and don'ts:"

by The NonProfit Times - June 23, 2015
Medical technology can track what your donors think about legacy giving. A conversation about planned giving makes prospects look back on their lives, think about their legacy and it’s all trackable.

According to Bill Tedesco, CEO and managing partner of DonorSearch in Marriottsville, Md., speaking during last fall’s National Catholic Development Conference (NCDC) conference in Chicago, it’s all about the science of giving."
