uticaOD.com - The Observer-Dispatch - Nonprofits now a $1 billion industry: "Nonprofits now a $1 billion industry August 21, 2007 Published Aug. 6, 2006 Local nonprofit organizations have filled part of the void left by the exodus of manufacturing operations, growing into a $1.1 billion industry that employs more than 18,000 people in Oneida and Herkimer counties. * Between 1995 and 2004, the number of nonprofits with revenue of $25,000 or more increased by 25 percent in the Mohawk Valley. The roughly 750 agencies in existence today serve many thousands of local residents. * Total revenue generated by the sector nearly doubled in that same period, up from $593 million to the current $1.1 billion level."
