Any announcement as visible as the Giving Pledge is meant to do more than to show what a small group of very rich people is doing. Its value is in the knock-on effect, in getting other people to pledge half or more of their vast wealth to charity.

“I hope it will inspire other people to think about their own philanthropy,” said Timothy L. Seiler, director of the fund-raising school at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University."
