The elder Bush and his wife Barbara have kept an active profile in Maine's public life, supporting civic events and philanthropic causes.
Barbara Bush has loaned her name to worthy causes, such as the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at the Maine Medical Center. Her literacy foundation has distributed $1.7 million in grants in Maine alone, and more than $13 million nationally. The University of New England in Biddeford is currently raising money to build the George and Barbara Bush Conference Center.
