We have no United Way here, and so five dozen local non-profit organizations have come to rely instead on UMCC as part of their annual financial plan.
For 10 years the MBNA credit-lender was a strong supporter of UMCC, and through its employee payroll check-off program and in other ways that company channeled an estimated $2 million in charitable giving to local organizations. As we report on Page 1 this week, that channel is now almost dry, because MBNA no longer exists as a corporate entity."
