Charities may face more rules

Charities may face more rules: "LANSING -- Leaders of several mid-Michigan nonprofit groups fear the introduction of additional regulations will hamper services to those seeking help.
Rocked by news of unscrupulous charities and investigations by the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, nonprofit organizations are arguing that allowing them to police themselves is better than loading them up with new rules and paperwork.
Media reports of scandals and 'the bad practices of a few people' have undermined the nonprofits' legacy, said Diana Aviv, president and CEO of The Independent Sector, a Washington-based advocacy group for nonprofit organizations, foundations and corporate philanthropy. "
