SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Muslim doctor used his position of prominence to run an illegal charity that defrauded donors of more than $500,000 and violated U.S. sanctions by sending some of the money to Iraq, a prosecutor said Monday.

Dr. Rafil Dhafir used his Syracuse-based charity, Help The Needy, 'as his very own financial playground,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Olmsted said in closing arguments before a U.S. District Court jury that has been listening to Dhafir's case since Oct. 21. "
