Labour Party Spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Brian O'Shea, has called for legislation on charities to be updated as soon as possible to ensure that bogus charities are not established as fronts for terrorist organisations to launder money.
Deputy O'Shea commented, 'Last week the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, reassured me that there was no evidence of terrorist organisations abusing charities legislation for this purpose. However, last year Minister of State Noel Ahern admitted that the lack of charities regulation in Ireland means it is open season for the abuse of charitable status at the moment. "
