Scotsman.com News - Politics - Executive in U-turn over charity move: "Executive in U-turn over charity move

MINISTERS today announced a U-turn which will allow some of Scotlands best-known institutions to keep their charitable status.

Quangos such as the National Museums of Scotland and Edinburghs Royal Botanic Garden faced losing millions of pounds because they would no longer be classed as charities.

But today deputy communities minister Johann Lamont said the Scottish Executive would amend its charity reforms to protect the status of the institutions.

The Executive previously insisted a key principle of the reforms was that charities should be independent and quangos could not qualify because they were subject to ministerial direction and the government appointed their trustees. "
