Charitable organizations not all equal; AG’s office: Do your homework first

Charitable organizations not all equal; AG’s office: Do your homework first: "The AG’s office released its annual “worst charities” list Friday, a document that relies largely on an IRS filing called a 990. Every year, nonprofits are required to file a 990, detailing how much money the organization takes in, how it’s spent and how much directors and other key personnel are paid.

The 20 charities on the AG’s list, all of which are based outside of Oregon, are notable for their use of professional fundraising firms, which eat up much of the money contributed by donors."

How To Donate Bitcoin To Charity And Get A Big Tax Deduction

How To Donate Bitcoin To Charity And Get A Big Tax Deduction: "Along with the growing popularity of Bitcoin,  the number of charitable organizations that accept virtual currencies has been growing. At the same time, so has government scrutiny, creating uncertainty about the continuing value of Bitcoin, Ripple, Litecoin,  and other, smaller currencies.  In March, the Internal  Revenue Service issued its long awaited opinion on the taxation of virtual currencies, ruling they should be treated as property, not currency.  That creates administrative and paperwork problems for those using Bitcoin, but also allows donors to obtain generous charitable income tax deductions for donating Bitcoin that is worth more than they paid for it, just as they do for giving appreciated stock to charity."

Choosing where to donate to charity is tough. Here's a simple guide to help. - Vox: "It's the holiday season, and for many households that means it's time to decide on a charity to donate to this year. According to the Blackbaud Charitable Giving Report, 17.5 percent of charitable giving happens in December — over twice the share you'd expect if giving were spaced evenly throughout the year.

If you still need to pick a cause for 2014, here are a few pointers: do your research first, give abroad, and consider just giving cash."

Peer to peer fundraising is booming. It's the fastest growing slice of the fundraising pie, and advances in technology, particularly in mobile, have helped create a perfect storm of effectiveness. Year-End Charitable Giving Bonanza is a Myth | Atlas of Giving - Fundraising Forecasting

Year-End Charitable Giving Bonanza is a Myth | Atlas of Giving - Fundraising Forecasting: "Posted on December 22, 2014
There is an assumption in the U.S. that the best charitable giving season is October, November, and December each year (Year-End). The facts do not support this myth.

Most believe that there are two reasons that year-end giving is good. First, they assume that donors are in the giving mood as they engage in all types of holiday gifting. The second theory is that donors are anxious to make gifts that they can deduct on their upcoming 2014 tax returns. Facts don’t support these assumptions. People give because they are asked…not because they are feeling the ‘giving spirit’. Only 36% of Americans itemize their taxes and about 80% of those take a charitable deduction. This means that fewer than 30% of all Americans could even possibly be motivated by tax benefits in their giving. And, many of those donors made their gifts at other times of the year. In fact, the 10 largest gifts made in 2014 were NOT made in the 4th quarter."

That means that you have 12 days to squeeze in most of your remaining tax deductions for 2014 (there are a few exceptions like those for IRA contributions). But how do we overcome the obstacle of tradition in our profession and allow for progress? We ourselves must be fearless in the pursuit of evaluating what is currently working, pushing for best in class programs and making a future for ourselves and our donors. Let's face it, most of our donors work in industries that have fully embraced the new millennium and beyond. Yet when they interact with us, they are driven back into the stone age by being respectful to our "traditions". To this I say, there has to be a better way.

What a wonderful day it was — December 2nd — with people around the world showing how much they cared about giving back.  They gave money, time, their voices, their all.  And I’m proud that the company where I work was a part of that.  How much good was done?  We’ll actually never know because there’s simply no way to quantify all the good.  What we do know is how much was given online that day, processed by Blackbaud, as a proxy for how much giving has increased year over year. "

Even 19th-century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli had something to say on the subject. "There are three kinds of lies," he said. "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."

The typical reader doesn't have the time or patience to slog his or her way through a sludge of stats. But you'll find he or she is open to anecdotes. They provide action and feeling and more dramatically reveal your organization."

Let's Put An End To Restricted Giving - Forbes: "We like to think that private charitable giving is inherently different to, say, buying a service. This is why governments subsidize the one but not the other (tax exemptions amount to $55 billion per year in the US alone). In practice, however, donations are much more transactional than most donors admit. Through restrictions, donors can tell grantees how to spend their money. A typical case would be a donor giving to a relief organization in response to a specific disaster, or a foundation giving to a university for a specific line of research."

Or, more precisely, how they don’t. Every day we all use words to communicate what we want to get across, in a range of ways. Our success or failure at it really matters. And mostly, most of us don’t manage to do it very well.

We have a choice when we sit down to write – to write something that might make a difference or to write something that will make no difference at all. We wouldn’t choose the latter deliberately, so our lack of success must be down to carelessness, or ignorance, or a failure to appreciate the importance of it."

Your check from your employer must be cashed at a check-cashing store, where they charge 5 percent of the check amount. You cannot shop online, do not have access to credit, and are likely terrified of being robbed. Luckily, new technology is on the horizon to help millions gain monetary protections and increase credit opportunities, leading to small business expansion and more hope for those trying to climb out of poverty."
